Ideology vs. Practical Problem Solving

The article "One Democrat's gamble on climate change", by Andrew Restuccia, outlines how policy issues affect the senatorial elections. He discusses the senate race in Michigan and how one Democrat, Gary Peter utilizes a unique strategy: climate change is a issue of national prominence. Gary Peter's choice to champion the environmental cause is a bold strategy to take during this election year. Due to the fact that this election is taking place in Michigan, his choice to be the poster child for this cause is particularly intriguing, as Michigan is a predominately industrial state.
The choice of which cause and stance to support is integral in any election. It is necessary to know your electorate and how they will stand on these issues.
Gary Peter's choice may be less ideological and more strategic than people think. His design to center his campaign around climate change (and the health of the Great Lakes) makes him tough to beat. In the article John Pampu, a native to Michigan stated Peter's claim of the Great Lakes being affected by climate change a little exaggerated by saying "global warming occurred hundreds and thousands of years ago." Yet continued to say shortly after that he and his employees would still support Peter, despite leaning to the conservative side, and said "We do want to protect it (the Great Lakes) and we'll fight tooth and nail."
